By 2005, Marvel Entertainment<\/a> had begun planning to produce its own films independently and distribute them through Paramount Pictures<\/a>. Previously, Marvel had co-produced<\/a> several superhero films<\/a> with Columbia Pictures<\/a>, New Line Cinema<\/a> and others, including a seven-year development deal with 20th Century Fox<\/a>. Marvel made relatively little profit from its licensing<\/a> deals with other studios and wanted to get more money out of its films while maintaining artistic control of the projects and distribution. Avi Arad<\/a>, head of Marvel’s film division, was pleased with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films<\/a> at Sony Pictures<\/a>, but was less pleased with others. As a result, Arad decided to form Marvel Studios<\/a>, Hollywood’s first major independent film<\/a> studio since DreamWorks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kevin Feige<\/a>, Arad’s second-in-command,realized that unlike\u00a0Spider-Man<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0X-Men<\/a>, whose film rights were licensed to Sony and Fox, respectively, Marvel still owned the rights to the core members of the\u00a0Avengers<\/a>. Feige, a self-described “fanboy”, envisioned creating a\u00a0shared universe<\/a>, just as creators\u00a0Stan Lee<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jack Kirby<\/a>\u00a0had done with their comic books in the early 1960s.\u00a0To raise capital, the studio secured funding from a seven-year, $525\u00a0million revolving credit facility with\u00a0Merrill Lynch<\/a>.\u00a0Marvel’s plan was to release individual films for their main characters and then merge them in a\u00a0crossover<\/a>\u00a0film.\u00a0Arad, who doubted the strategy yet insisted that it was his reputation that helped secure the initial financing, resigned the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
