The character was co-created by writer and editor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stan_Lee\">Stan Lee<\/a>, developed by scripter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larry_Lieber\">Larry Lieber<\/a>, and designed by artists&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don_Heck\">Don Heck<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Kirby\">Jack Kirby<\/a>. The character made his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_appearance\">first appearance<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tales_of_Suspense\">Tales of Suspense<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;#39 (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cover_date\">cover dated<\/a>&nbsp;March 1963), and received his own title in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iron_Man_(comic_book)\">Iron Man<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;#1 (May 1968). Also in 1963, the character founded the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avengers_(comics)\">Avengers<\/a>&nbsp;alongside&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thor_(Marvel_Comics)\">Thor<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hank_Pym\">Ant-Man<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wasp_(comics)\">Wasp<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hulk\">Hulk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A wealthy American&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Business_magnate\">business magnate<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Playboy_(lifestyle)\">playboy<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philanthropy\">philanthropist<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inventor\">inventor<\/a>&nbsp;and ingenious&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scientist\">scientist<\/a>,&nbsp;<strong>Anthony Edward &#8220;Tony&#8221; Stark<\/strong>&nbsp;suffers a severe chest injury during a kidnapping. When his captors attempt to force him to build a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weapon_of_mass_destruction\">weapon of mass destruction<\/a>, he instead creates a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iron_Man%27s_armor\">mechanized suit of armor<\/a>&nbsp;to save his life and escape captivity. Later, Stark develops his suit, adding weapons and other technological devices he designed through his company,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stark_Industries\">Stark Industries<\/a>. He uses the suit and successive versions to protect the world as Iron Man. Although at first concealing his true identity, Stark eventually publicly reveals himself to be Iron Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, Iron Man was a vehicle for Stan Lee to explore&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cold_War\">Cold War<\/a>&nbsp;themes, particularly the role of American technology and industry in the fight against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communism\">communism<\/a>.
