He&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_appearance\">first appeared<\/a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthology\">anthology<\/a>&nbsp;comic book&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amazing_Fantasy\">Amazing Fantasy<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;#15 (Aug. 1962) in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silver_Age_of_Comic_Books\">Silver Age of Comic Books<\/a>. He appears in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_comic_book\">American comic books<\/a>&nbsp;published by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marvel_Comics\">Marvel Comics<\/a>, as well as in a number of movies, television shows, and video game adaptations set in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marvel_Universe\">Marvel Universe<\/a>. In the stories, Spider-Man is the alias of&nbsp;<strong>Peter Parker<\/strong>, an orphan raised by his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aunt_May\">Aunt May<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uncle_Ben\">Uncle Ben<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a>&nbsp;after his parents&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_and_Mary_Parker\">Richard and Mary Parker<\/a>&nbsp;died in a plane crash. Lee and Ditko had the character deal with the struggles of adolescence and financial issues, and accompanied him with many&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Spider-Man_supporting_characters\">supporting characters<\/a>, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._Jonah_Jameson\">J. Jonah Jameson<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harry_Osborn\">Harry Osborn<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Max_Modell\">Max Modell<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romantic_interest\">romantic interests<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gwen_Stacy\">Gwen Stacy<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Jane_Watson\">Mary Jane Watson<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Spider-Man_enemies\">foes<\/a>&nbsp;such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doctor_Octopus\">Doctor Octopus<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norman_Osborn\">Green Goblin<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eddie_Brock\">Venom<\/a>. His&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Origin_story\">origin story<\/a>&nbsp;has him acquiring spider-related abilities after a bite from a radioactive spider; these include clinging to surfaces, superhuman strength and agility, and detecting danger with his &#8220;spider-sense.&#8221; He then builds wrist-mounted &#8220;web-shooter&#8221; devices that shoot artificial spider-webbing of his own design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Spider-Man first appeared in the early 1960s, teenagers in superhero comic books were usually relegated to the role of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sidekick\">sidekick<\/a>&nbsp;to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protagonist\">protagonist<\/a>. The Spider-Man series broke ground by featuring Peter Parker, a high school student from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queens\">Queens<\/a>&nbsp;behind Spider-Man&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Secret_identity\">secret identity<\/a>&nbsp;and with whose &#8220;self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness&#8221; young readers could relate.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spider-Man#cite_note-Wright-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;While Spider-Man had all the makings of a sidekick, unlike previous teen heroes such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bucky_Barnes\">Bucky<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dick_Grayson\">Robin<\/a>, Spider-Man had no superhero mentor like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Captain_America\">Captain America<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batman\">Batman<\/a>; he thus had to learn for himself that &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/With_great_power_comes_great_responsibility\">with great power there must also come great responsibility<\/a>&#8220;\u2014a line included in a text box in the final panel of the first Spider-Man story but later&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Retroactive_continuity\">retroactively attributed<\/a>&nbsp;to his guardian, the late Uncle Ben Parker.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spider-Man&nbsp;is a&nbsp;superhero&nbsp;created by writer-editor&nbsp;Stan Lee&nbsp;and writer-artist&nbsp;Steve Ditko.
