Spider-Man<\/strong> is a superhero<\/a> created by writer-editor Stan Lee<\/a> and writer-artist Steve Ditko<\/a>. He first appeared<\/a> in the anthology<\/a> comic book Amazing Fantasy<\/a><\/em> #15 (Aug. 1962) in the Silver Age of Comic Books<\/a>. He appears in American comic books<\/a> published by Marvel Comics<\/a>, as well as in a number of movies, television shows, and video game adaptations set in the Marvel Universe<\/a>. In the stories, Spider-Man is the alias of Peter Parker<\/strong>, an orphan raised by his Aunt May<\/a> and Uncle Ben<\/a> in New York City<\/a> after his parents Richard and Mary Parker<\/a> died in a plane crash. Lee and Ditko had the character deal with the struggles of adolescence and financial issues, and accompanied him with many supporting characters<\/a>, such as J. Jonah Jameson<\/a>, Harry Osborn<\/a>, Max Modell<\/a>, romantic interests<\/a> Gwen Stacy<\/a> and Mary Jane Watson<\/a>, and foes<\/a> such as Doctor Octopus<\/a>, the Green Goblin<\/a> and Venom<\/a>. His origin story<\/a> has him acquiring spider-related abilities after a bite from a radioactive spider; these include clinging to surfaces, superhuman strength and agility, and detecting danger with his “spider-sense.” He then builds wrist-mounted “web-shooter” devices that shoot artificial spider-webbing of his own design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Spider-Man first appeared in the early 1960s, teenagers in superhero comic books were usually relegated to the role of sidekick<\/a> to the protagonist<\/a>. The Spider-Man series broke ground by featuring Peter Parker, a high school student from Queens<\/a> behind Spider-Man’s secret identity<\/a> and with whose “self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness” young readers could relate.[9]<\/a><\/sup> While Spider-Man had all the makings of a sidekick, unlike previous teen heroes such as Bucky<\/a> and Robin<\/a>, Spider-Man had no superhero mentor like Captain America<\/a> and Batman<\/a>; he thus had to learn for himself that “with great power there must also come great responsibility<\/a>“\u2014a line included in a text box in the final panel of the first Spider-Man story but later retroactively attributed<\/a> to his guardian, the late Uncle Ben Parker.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
