Thor is a prominently mentioned god throughout the recorded history<\/a> of the Germanic peoples<\/a>, from the Roman occupation<\/a> of regions of Germania<\/a>, to the Germanic expansions of the Migration Period<\/a>, to his high popularity during the Viking Age<\/a>, when, in the face of the process of the Christianization of Scandinavia<\/a>, emblems of his hammer, Mj\u00f6lnir<\/a>, were worn and Norse pagan<\/a> personal names<\/a> containing the name of the god bear witness to his popularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the nature of the Germanic corpus, narratives featuring Thor are only attested in Old Norse, where Thor appears throughout Norse mythology<\/a>. Norse mythology, largely recorded in Iceland<\/a> from traditional material stemming from Scandinavia, provides numerous tales featuring the god. In these sources, Thor bears at least fifteen names<\/a>, is the husband of the golden-haired goddess Sif<\/a>, is the lover of the j\u00f6tunn<\/a> J\u00e1rnsaxa<\/a>, and is generally described as fierce eyed, red haired<\/a> and red bearded.[1]<\/a><\/sup> With Sif, Thor fathered the goddess (and possible valkyrie<\/a>) \u00der\u00fa\u00f0r<\/a>; with J\u00e1rnsaxa, he fathered Magni<\/a>; with a mother whose name is not recorded, he fathered M\u00f3\u00f0i<\/a>, and he is the stepfather of the god Ullr<\/a>. By way of Odin<\/a>, Thor has numerous brothers<\/a>, including Baldr<\/a>. Thor has two servants, \u00dej\u00e1lfi and R\u00f6skva<\/a>, rides in a cart or chariot pulled by two goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnj\u00f3str<\/a> (that he eats and resurrects), and is ascribed three dwellings (Bilskirnir<\/a>, \u00der\u00fa\u00f0heimr<\/a>, and \u00der\u00fa\u00f0vangr<\/a>). Thor wields the hammer Mj\u00f6lnir<\/a>, wears the belt Megingj\u00f6r\u00f0<\/a> and the iron gloves J\u00e1rngreipr<\/a>, and owns the staff Gr\u00ed\u00f0arv\u00f6lr<\/a>. Thor’s exploits, including his relentless slaughter of his foes and fierce battles with the monstrous serpent J\u00f6rmungandr<\/a>\u2014and their foretold mutual deaths during the events of Ragnar\u00f6k<\/a>\u2014are recorded throughout sources for Norse mythology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
