Created by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cartoonist\">cartoonists<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Simon\">Joe Simon<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Kirby\">Jack Kirby<\/a>, the character&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_appearance\">first appeared<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Captain_America#Golden_Age\">Captain America Comics<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;#1 (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cover_date\">cover dated<\/a>&nbsp;March 1941) from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timely_Comics\">Timely Comics<\/a>, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. Captain America was designed as a patriotic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supersoldier\">supersoldier<\/a>&nbsp;who often fought the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Axis_powers\">Axis powers<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a>&nbsp;and was Timely Comics&#8217; most popular character during the wartime period. The popularity of superheroes waned following the war, and the&nbsp;<em>Captain America<\/em>&nbsp;comic book was discontinued in 1950, with a short-lived revival in 1953. Since Marvel Comics revived the character in 1964, Captain America has remained in publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The character wears a costume bearing an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flag_of_the_United_States\">American flag<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motif_(visual_arts)\">motif<\/a>, and he utilizes a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Captain_America%27s_shield\">nearly-indestructible shield<\/a>&nbsp;that he throws as a projectile. Captain America is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alter_ego\">alter ego<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<strong>Steve Rogers<\/strong>, a frail young artist enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Captain_America#Super_Soldier_Serum\">super-soldier serum<\/a>&#8221; after joining the military to aid the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">United States<\/a>&nbsp;government&#8217;s efforts in World War II. Near the end of the war, he was trapped in ice and survived in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cryopreservation\">suspended animation<\/a>&nbsp;until he was revived in modern times.
